New trends in cosmetic dermatology

Collagen is responsible from the strength and integrity of the skin, while elastin is from the elasticity. From our thirties onwards, the production of collagen and elastin slows down. The skin becomes less resilient, starts to sag, and thin wrinkles appear. When this natural process is accompanied by external factors such as exposure to ultraviolet rays of the sun, alcohol consumption, smoking and some diseases, skin aging is induced. Anti-aging treatments, on the other hand, aim at re-synthesizing the deteriorated collagen and elastin.
Patients expect to achieve a younger and healthier look with a minimal downtime.
Preventive dermocosmetic applications delay the signs of aging through re-synthesizing collagen and elastin, and replacing the missing hyaluronic acid. Among these are roller application, PRP (plateletle rich plasma threapy) and mesotherapy. All these treatments are provided in Anadolu Medical Center Dermatology clinics.
Roller applications
Roller application is one of the leading dermocosmetic interventions that stimulate new collagen production. Sadiye Kuş M.D., Dermatologist at Anadolu Medical Center, gave information about the treatment:
This treatment is available since 1997, yet attained the recognition it deserved very recently. It reduces the thin lines and wrinkles, eases acne scars and stretch marks. Via the “roller” device, multiple transient tiny holes (micro-channels) are created at the dermis. This dermal injury induces the release of growth factors and stimulate the production of new collagen. The newly synthesized collagen acts as a filling agent, the skin gets thicker and looks healthier. Moreover, the micro-channels enable the applied products to reach deeper and be better absorbed. The roller application easily tolerated by the patient. It has many advantages over several anti-aging procedures. It can be used for men and women, for all skin types including the most sensitive, and bares no risk of permanent pigmentation changes. Since the epidermis is left intact during this process, the healing period is rapid, thus the patient’s social life is not affected. It is conveniently applied on the hands and neck, as opposed to other procedures that risk scars. The procedure can be applied during summer.
This treatment can be performed in 4-6 week intervals without any limitation for sessions. The number of sessions depends on the severity of the problem, depth of signs and the patient’s response to the treatment.
PRP
Another on the boil application is PRP. As Figen Akın M.D., Dermatologist at Anadolu Medical Center indicates:
“PRP is the abbreviation for the Platelet Rich Plasma therapy. It is based on the re-injection of one’s blood after it is enriched with the patients’ own platelets. Just like a routine blood test, one or a few tubes of blood are drawn from the arm or hand. After an 8 minutes-long centrifuge, the red blood cells are separated from the plasma. This thrombocyte-rich plasma is injected to the clean skin through filling method or mesotherapy.
Thrombocytes are the major source for growth factors in peripheral blood. To some extent they reach the aging tissue on their own and start collagen synthesis. However, this is not effective enough. PRP application enhances the amount of thrombocyte to 2-4 folds that reaches the target tissues. Thrombocytes start the collagen synthesis via growth factors.
Although PRP, can be applied once on face and neck, it is recommended to have PRP therapy in a few sessions with 2-4 week intervals to reduce lines and wrinkles.
Chemical Peeling
Chemical peeling is the major dermocosmetic procedure performed during fall and winter. Figen Akın, M.D. gave the following information:
“Solutions such as Glycolic acid, salisilic acid, and Jessner are used to peel the upper layer of the skin and stimulate the cell cycle which slow down with advanced age. The skin is cleansed; looks smoother, and healthier. Chemical peeling procedure reduces the appearance of thin wrinkles; help the recovery of acne and acne scars. The procedure eases the inequalities of pigment distribution and contributes to a more homogenous look.”
